Paine sent Mstislav V. S. post-Apollo plans and suggested exploration of cooperative programs. In April 1970 Dr. Paine suggested, in an 18 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project informal meeting with academician Anatoly A. Blagonravov in New York, that the two nations cooperate on astronaut safety, including compatible docking equipment on space stations and shuttles to permit rescue operations in space emergencies. Further discussions led to a October 28, 1970, agreement on joint efforts to design compatible docking arrangements.

It became the world leader in commercial launch services and introduced the concept of dual-payload launches for telecommunications satellites. Ariel (ionospheric research satellite). The world’s first international satellite, a cooperative project between the United Kingdom and NASA. Other satellites followed in the program. Ariel 1 (UK-1 before orbit), launched from Cape Canaveral on April 26, 1962, was built by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and instrumented with six British experiments to make integrated measurements in the ionosphere.

The call signs for the craft were: Apollo 9, Gumdrop (CM), Spider (LM); Apollo 10, Charlie Brown (CM), Snoopy (LM); Apollo 11, 15 Apollo Columbia (CM), Eagle (LM); Apollo 12, Yankee Clipper (CM), Intrepid (LM); Apollo 13, Odyssey (CM), Aquarius (LM); Apollo 14, Kitty Hawk (CM), Antares (LM); Apollo 15, Endeavour (CM), Falcon (LM); Apollo 16, Casper (CM), Orion (LM); Apollo 17, America (CM), Challenger (LM).
