We often frame experiential avoidance within the framework of DOTS, adapted from Russ Harris’s “Join the DOTS” approach (2009). The letters stand for: Distracting, Opting Out (avoidance), Time Travel (thinking into the past and the future), and Self-Harm. Adolescents tell us about commonly used distractions such as hours spent on social media (Facebook and Twitter, for example), playing with their cell phones, sleeping, or listening to music. They tell us about events or people they avoid (parties or other social functions, school, studying, family gatherings, and so on) and strategies they use interpersonally to avoid being rejected (such as excessively helping others, always presenting themselves as happy, or never asserting their own opinion).

Nonarbitrary Relating Getting back to the five senses experience mentioned in the previous section, when children begin to use language, they relate objects according to what they can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. The three main properties of this relating, mutual entailment, combinatorial entailment, and transformation of stimulus function, are described below. Mutual Entailment Early on, children are taught that a particular object can be referred to by a particular word, and vice versa.

This story not only describes past behavior, but may guide future behavior and as such, is an important part of the work we do with adolescents. Important relational frames in the area of “self” and “story” include the deictic, comparative, and evaluative ones. Deictic framing is closely tied to perspective taking and allows one to learn about oneself in relation to others and the world: I-You, Here- There, and Now-Then. Deictic framing is established within a social context involving countless experiences of “I versus You,” for example, which are comparative and 30 ACT Basics evaluative by nature (McHugh & Stewart, 2012).
